Here we go again. It comes as no surprise that yet another public figure’s cultural negligence has offended people all over the world. The 26-year-old Monaco royal, Charlotte Casiraghi, wore a Native American outfit this past Saturday while competing in the Gucci Masters horse show in Villepinte, France. Her wardrobe choice has many reacting angrily.
Despite the fact that her fellow rider, Edwina Tops-Alexander, was dressed as a cowboy, the daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco and granddaughter of film star Grace Kelly is the one who is getting all the heat.
Hold on a second – forget about the other rider, the horse was even dressed up–for crying out loud. Face paint? A headdress? Really?! Mayday, mayday, dare I say someone call PETA?! We’ve got some real animal abuse to report.
Unfortunately, this incident sounds all too familiar. Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss received the same backlash after she walked the runway in a buckskin bikini and feathered headdress about a month ago (need for another PETA mention?).
The only difference between the two models remains clear – Victoria’s Secret made their apology; after all, it is the “right thing to do;” Casiraghi or Gucci have yet to do so. Where’s the PR representative? What about the people who are able to play in the same field without ever causing an outrage? Other competitors at the Gucci Masters show chose normal costumes – such as donkeys, angels and Flinstones – that don’t offend an oppressed culture’s clothing. High-five to them! The only closing thought that remains in my mind is, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” –Proverbs
