Fourth of July

From the Fourth of July Friday to Trending News Monday

As fireworks rocked the Nation over the Fourth of July weekend, these trending news stories blew up on Twitter.

Tropical Storm Arthur

While freedom rang throughout North America, Tropical Storm Arthur was breaking free in the Atlantic for the first storm of this year’s hurricane season and arrived just in time to ruin Fourth of July barbecues and even some fireworks displays on the East Coast. Although the Arthur was downgraded from a hurricane and didn’t cause as much damage as was expected, the storm still left a wake of destruction in its path from downing trees and power lines to causing floods.

Bad Weekend for the Box Office

While the fireworks may have caught a spark over the weekend, the box office sure didn’t. This Fourth of July weekend was down 40% from last year and saw the lowest box office figures since the 1980s (when accounting for inflation). According to the Box Office Mojo, Transformers: Age of Extinction plummeted 63% from its first week to its second, bringing its total gross to $175,395,954. Despite rebranding the series and its marketing efforts, Transformers is thus far a box office disappointment.

While the poor weather brought on by Arthur as well as the short holiday weekend (since the fourth fell on a Friday) may have accounted for lower numbers, only three of the top ten box office films premiered this weekend: Tammy ($33,306,589), Deliver Us from Evil ($15,252,323) and Earth to Echo ($13,567,557).
