It’s officially 1 week away from the best weekend in Chicago: LOLLAPALOOZA. Every year I anxiously wait for the 1st weekend of August to roll around, because it always marks the most wonderful time of the year for Chicago music fans.
This year, a lot of people have been complaining about the Lolla lineup (pretty much a standard for any music festival out there now) because there are too many artists who’ve previously played the festival. As somebody who has been going to Lolla for the past eight years, I can somewhat agree with this, but in the end… WHO CARES! You’re going to see some of the best musical artists, all crammed into beautiful Grant Park within three lovely days of Chicago’s Summer. What more could you possibly ask for?
For me, Lolla is a fun time no matter who is playing. It’s all about the experience as a whole. But, for those of you out there who strictly just care about the lineup I have a little treat for you. Just for fun this Friday, and especially to the kids who believe that Lolla’s 2014 lineup is a bit “stale,” here’s a new refreshing taste of some of the best remixes of the Lolla 2014 Artists.
Arctic Monkeys – “Do I Wanna Know?” (Sam Smith Cover)
This first remix isn’t much of a remix, but it’s a beautiful and flawless cover of the alternative radio favorite “Do I Wanna Know?” done by the greatly talented Sam Smith. The Arctic Monkey’s already played Lolla back in 2011 during a daytime slot and are now playing as one of the headliners. Their new album “AM” definitely has some power songs in it that can hold down a headliner spot, but in my opinion, Lolla is definitely missing out on not having Sam Smith in the Lineup. I recently saw him play The Vic back in October, and I can honestly say I’ve never heard an artist with a more pure and talented voice than his. Which is why this cover is something so refreshing.
Calvin Harris – “Summer” (Diplo & Grandtheft Remix)
Calvin Harris last played Lolla in 2012 where he performed on the always-packed Perry’s Stage. This year, Harris has been promoted to the headliner position and will play on the Bud Light Stage. For a DJ, that’s a pretty big deal. His current hit “Summer” has all the perfect essential sounds for a summer anthem, but in this remix Lolla veteran Diplo has added his signature sound to the track to give it more hype.
Foster the People – “Best friend” (A-Trak & gLAdiator Remix)

Foster the People also played Lolla in 2011. Since then, they’ve gained a lot of major radio play and have a new album Supermodel to play through their set. Their single, “Best Friend,” is heavily played on radio stations and 2009 Lolla alum A-Track has now given it a more dance-heavy vibe with this new remix.
Chromeo – “Jealous” (Dillon Francis Remix)
Chromeo is yet another seasoned Lolla vet. They first played the festival in 2008 and then again in 2010. They are back this year supporting their new album White Women. The duo isn’t quite a headliner yet, but their catchy single “Jealous” has been gaining a good amount of radio play. This remix, done by another Lolla alum Dillon Francis, is a more “clubby” version of the song with a bigger beat then the funkier original.
Lorde – “Tennis Court” (Diplo’s Andre Agassi Reebok Pump Remix)
Although Lorde is a newcomer to the Lolla lineup (which is pretty refreshing in itself), her songs have some of the BEST remixes out right now. Countless DJs have remixed Lorde’s normally moody and dark music to take on a new life in dance clubs. Leave it to the best of the best, Diplo (again), to also join in on the Lorde remix Revolution.
