Funny Friday: Brace Yourselves, Music is Coming

For this week’s Funny Friday, we take a look at the musical exploits of two pop culture icons, as the TV series Game of Thrones joins forces with the band Coldplay to produce one of the funniest videos online, all for a good cause.

WARNING: SPOILERS IN THE VIDEOS!!!

Have you ever thought of Game of Thrones as a musical? Well, the famous band Coldplay did and decided to produce one in honor of the televised fundraiser Red Nose Day USA, a charity dedicated to raising money for children and young people living in poverty while having a good time together.

For this occasion, the cast of Game of Thrones, Coldplay and NBC worked together and made a hilarious musical based on the hit HBO fantasy drama. This 12-minute “behind the scenes” video follows lead singer Chris Martin and his band through the production’s creation and rehearsals. In three weeks, the video has drawn more than 10 million viewers on YouTube. It originally aired as part of the NBC’s “Red Nose Day” special that brought popular artists and actors to encourage people to donate. The day was a success, as the organization announced it received over $21 million in donations.

In addition to Game of Thrones’ regular cast members and the members of Coldplay, the video features Liam Neeson as its narrator. The first half focuses on just how terrible an idea the musical is; Emilia Clarke even compares it to Titanic: “Not in terms of the successful movie, but in terms of the unsuccessful boat”. But things change when Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) shows up. With a phone call and promise of free food, more of the cast appear and begin rehearsing the first song of the musical, “The Red Wedding” soundtrack.

All of your favorite cast members make an appearance and sing songs with funny lyrics based on their show counterparts. It’s hilarious, silly, and ridiculous, and you’re definitely going to want all the songs in your playlist. Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) sings a reggae-style tune while Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) performs the classic rock song “Wild Thing,” adapted to “Wildling.” As usual, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) provides the best performance with “Still Going Strong”, a “Tyrion’s way” tribute to the many fallen characters. But the funniest remains “Closer to Home,” performed by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister). “The first romantic ballade about incest in Coldplay’s career,” Liam Neeson informs us. And believe it or not, it’s pretty catchy.

Chris Martin’s fairly confident: “Bang. Curtains. Tony Award.”
