Selfie Usher

Funny Friday, but first, let me take a selfie!

If you were hoping the “selfie” was just a fad that would phase out, guess again! Marketers are bringing the selfie to a whole new level. After all, selfie is an official word in the English language. Marketers have realized that the trend to snap a photo of one’s self and share it on every social media account imaginable isn’t going anywhere (duck-faced girls everywhere cheer), and they want to be a part of it. We’ll share with you what some marketers are doing, but first listen to #Selfie (do it in the name of Funny Friday).

Shopping selfies has a ring to it, doesn’t it? Karl Lagerfeld, German fashion designer and Chief Creative Director for Chanel, opened his flagship store in London, and the changing rooms are quite high tech. These cool rooms are equipped with Internet-enabled iPads that allow customers to take pictures of their outfits, play with filters and upload them to their favorite social network. Now your Facebook friends can have a say on what you buy as well. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the occasional #Selfie (sometimes real lighting doesn’t do my face justice like “Valencia” does on Instagram), but there’s a very thin line between funny/quirky and obsessive/annoying… be careful with how you use these #Selfies or person paying attention to your posts might just be your self(ie).

Legerdeld isn’t the only marketer cashing in on the social shopping experience. Other retailers like Burberry are equipped with iPads in their stores, offering customers a social way to shop. Burberry has built its recent stores to resemble high tech runways transmitting live news feed to their floor-to-ceiling interactive walls. Another cool feature is the interactive mirrors that react to microchips in the clothes that show product information, as well as a video of the outfit on the catwalk. The real question is when do we get the catwalk selfies?
