Adrian Zavala Unmasked as Winner of The Chicago Film Festival Poster Contest

The San Jose Group Art Director’s Design Selected in International Competition

CHICAGO (March 27, 2007) – Adrian Zavala, senior art director at The San Jose Group, has been named the winner of the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago’s 23rd Annual Chicago Latino Film Festival poster contest. His design was chosen from more than 140 entries submitted from around the globe and will be used not only as the official poster for the event, but also in all promotional materials.

“I am honored that my design was selected for the official poster,” said Zavala. “It means so much to be recognized for a design that is inspired by my Mexican heritage.”

The poster consists of a lucha libre mask – the type traditionally worn by Mexican wrestlers – and is covered with symbolic images representing Latin culture. The inspiration behind the mask design came from El Santo, a famous luchador (Mexican wrestler) who also starred as a wrestler in several movies during the 1950s and ‘60s in Mexico. The symbols covering the mask, which originate from various Latin American countries, represent the aspects of Latino culture that inspire directors to make movies about Latin America.

“We are proud of Adrian and his accomplishments in this renowned competition,” said George L. San Jose, president and COO of The San Jose Group. “His creative talent is well-deserved of this prestigious award.”

Zavala joined The San Jose Group from Mexico a year and a half ago. He brought with him fifteen years of professional experience developing award-winning creative campaigns for multinational advertising firms throughout Latin America. In addition to his professional experience, Zavala is also a talented painter with more than 18 years of experience, including several main public exhibits in Mexican museums and independent galleries.

The Chicago Latino Film Festival is produced by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago (ILCC) in cooperation with Columbia College Chicago. As part of the ILCC’s mission, the Festival serves as a vehicle to break the barriers of stereotypes and provoke the audience to challenge mainstream ideals of the Latino identity by showing, through film, that Latinos are defined by more than 20 Iberoamerican countries and come from all social and racial backgrounds. This year’s festival will run April 13-25. For more information, please visit www.latinoculturalcenter.org.
