The leaves rustle on the ground beneath our feet, neighbors place pumpkins on their doorsteps, friends populate Instagram with photos of corn mazes and apple picking and the color pink illuminates the city skyline. All of these indicate that it must be October. While the month is jam-packed with festive excitement from Halloween, Oktoberfest, Hispanic Heritage Month, the World Series and the start of the NHL season, October’s 31-days also culminate as the National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Since 1985, the American Cancer Society and the Imperial Chemical Industries (now a part of AstraZeneca) encourage Americans to think pink in October, and several brands and nonprofits have joined the bandwagon to raise awareness for breast cancer and funds for its research. Throughout the month, pink will be painted on football fields, paraded around hundreds of American cities hosting charity walks and runs and plastered on every piece of promotional content from M&Ms to Mercedes-Benz. While the branded content might be a way for keeping products top of mind, it more importantly promotes the cause. In the case of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s to promote mammograms. As such, brands have released several clever ads throughout the years to encourage women to get their mammograms. This Throwback Thursday, we’re featuring some of the most creative Breast Cancer Awareness ads and PSAs.
