Throwback Thursday: Kurt Cobain Revamped
For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we take a look at how a recent documentary puts an original and refreshing spin on a rock legend’s well-known tale.
It’s been almost 30 years since Kurt Cobain first arrived on the music scene with his band Nirvana, bringing with them grimy flannel shirts and a rebellious attitude. They would come to be one of the defining rock bands of the 90s and beyond, their influence felt years later. Twenty years have passed since Cobain’s death in 1994, yet his one-of-a-kind vocals still strike a chord with listeners new and old.
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s death, HBO released the documentary Cobain: Montage of Heck. Written, directed and produced by Brett Morgen, the film stands out as a unique piece in the world of film. Frame by frame, Cobain’s life is revealed like never before through different types of mass media, forming the montage alluded to in the title. Each piece offers a kaleidoscope view of Kurt’s life using quirky animation, never before heard cassette recordings, interviews, and old home videos. Cobain’s handwritten diary entries, doodles, and notes quite literally crawl across the screen.
