Trending News Monday: Later Lollapalooza

The epic music festival known as Lollapalooza came and went this weekend, and the concert dominated the news in Chicago from surprise guest performances and appearances, alleged police brutality and damages left to Grant Park. This Trending News Monday, let’s take a look at some of the headlines from Chicago’s biggest weekend.

Eminem Surprises Chicago with Rihanna

Rapper Eminem headlined Lollapalooza Friday night, and news outlets are still talking about his performance during which he spit lyrics from 31 songs. Much of the hype surrounding his performance is due to his special guest star, Rihanna, who joined him on stage at the end of his set to perform “Love the Way You Lie,” “Monster” and “Stan.” These three songs provided Chicago with a preview to the three-city Monster Tour the pair kick off this week.

Malia Obama Takes Lollapalooza

While President Obama prepped for his 53rd birthday, his teenage daughter Malia took Lollapalooza by storm. After all, it’s not every day that festival goers get to rock out with the president’s daughter. She stayed through Chance the Rapper’s finale, and (based on reactions on Twitter) the first-daughter may have been more popular than the close-out performance.

Lollapalooza Security Guard Assaults Performer

Blood Orange took the stage Friday night, where singer Dev Hynes performed while wearing a tee-shirt with handwritten messages protesting police brutality. Ironically, twenty minutes after his set, Hynes began tweeting about a security guard who assaulted him and his girlfriend.

Lollapalooza released a statement Saturday, but there’s no word on actions taken against the security guard.

Grant Park Sustains Over $300,000 Worth of Damages

The festival goers may be gone, but promoters C3 Presents are still working to clean up the remnants of the festival, and when they leave, city officials will assess the damages. Because of the heavy rain yesterday, parts of Grant Park have been transformed to giant mud pits and the damages are expected to total over $300,000. When C3 Presents moves out of the park, much of the Grant Park will be closed for repairs.
