Sweet Niblets —Miley Cyrus sure isn’t Hannah Montana (or Miley Stewart for that matter).

While MTV might be mostly broadcasting reality television 364 days a year, at least they dedicate one to it’s namesake. Last night, the Music Television network hosted their annual Video Music Awards (VMAs). While Justin Timberlake reunited with ‘NSYNC, Taylor Swift got off a dig at her ex—Harry Styles—and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis brought home three Moon Men, Miley Cyrus has been making some of the most notable headlines following her performance last night.

Even though the twenty-year-old singer didn’t take home a Moon Man, the Internet cannot stop buzzing about Cyrus, who took the stage for her debut VMA performance. While audiences expected the young twerking star to be a little over-the-top, they didn’t necessarily expect the raunchy show they got. When Robin Thicke joined her on stage, Cyrus shed her skimpy teddy bear outfit for a revealing gold two piece ensemble and equipped herself with a foam finger. Risqué dance moves left viewers with mixed feelings—some applauding Cyrus and Thicke in their willingness to go for it, while others were left disgusted.

The raunchy performance had the Parents Television Council commenting on the controversial content.

Director of Public Policy Dan Isett released a statement saying, “MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials — while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14.”

While MTV has experienced criticism for the content displayed on the network countless times since its inception, the Viacom-owned network and its public relations team should note the widespread public disapproval for the overly-sexed awards show. They might brush it off by stating “We just called it Miley bein’ Miley,” but wouldn’t it be pertinent to please the parents who pay for the cable watched by the demographic the network is trying to target and (at the very least) keep the extreme raunchiness to a minimum?

Sex might sell, but unless MTV can sell it tastefully (and to adults), controversial reactions are almost certain to arise.
