Some took this weekend to go for a nice dip in Lake Michigan, others went for a dive on the red carpet; some spent their Sunday casually eating pizza and snapping selfies, others were defending their freedom and government. All of these, however, were trending topics this weekend that we’re highlighting on this Trending News Monday.
Local News: #SwimmyFallon
It all started with a tweet from Mayor Rahm Emanuel and ended with a freezing Tonight Show Host Jimmy Fallon emerging from Lake Michigan clad in his signature suit and tie. Sunday, both Mayor Emanuel and Fallon took part in Chicago’s Polar Plunge, an event whose three thousand participants raised money for the special Olympics by running into (and out of) the freezing Lake Michigan. If Mayor Emanuel holds up his end of the bargain, he will be appearing (sometime) on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
National News: Ellen Beat Obama, Broke Twitter
Hollywood’s most famous and important stars gathered Sunday night for the biggest night in cinema, and they kept the Academy Awards entertaining. Ellen DeGeneres, hosting the Oscars for a second time, broke President Obama’s most retweeted tweet of all time record last night with the help of a few famous friends: Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, Julia Roberts, Lupita Nyong’o, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum and Peter Nyong’o. The selfie was retweeted over two million times before midnight and currently has almost three million retweets. During the Oscars, Twitter experienced some issues, apparently due to DeGeneres’s historical tweet.

International News: Ukraine Crisis Escalations
The Ukraine Crisis continues to escalate in Crimea where the Russian marines have arrived. Through the unstable government issues in Ukraine and Vladimir Putin’s power gaining hold on the land, the controversy will likely continue to escalate. Even though the U.S. and the E.U. have spoken out against Putin’s and Russia’s involvement in Ukraine, it’s unlikely either will get involved in the conflict.
